X Marks the Mystery Spot

Like many Tosa homeowners, I have several of these on the sidewalk outside my house:

I have had these X's for several weeks. Neither my neighbors nor I are sure what they mean. I think I know, but here is my mailbox:

As you can see, my mailbox is empty. The city has yet to send me anything to tell me what these X's mean. Unfortunately, I think it means something that will cost me money. Upon a quick search on the city's website, I found this item. However, it's pretty old.

So, do you have these same pretty X's in front of your house? Has anybody told you what they mean?

It means your getting a new sidewalk.  Red x's indicate damage to the existing concrete that is not bad enough to replace.  They put the red ones down so you can't say it was damaged by the contractors.

Yeah - get out your checkbook Karen.

Do you have any idea where the price of concrete has gone?

Yeah, see that's what I'm afraid of. I'm figuring there's money involved which is why I'm really concerned that I haven't heard any info yet.

At the same time as those Xs appeared on the sidewalk sections in front of our previous Tosa residence we had additional marks on our driveway apron as well as up and down the street for our entire block.  That cost so much money I don't even want to dredge up those memories.  Besides the thousands and thousands of dollars we also had to put up with an entire summer and fall of keeping the windows shut due to dust from road construction and the months of living with a gravel street.  And once all that starts, don't even think about doing any exterior painting -- too gritty and dirty outside!!  If you get the full treatment like we did you'll also be carrying your groceries for at least a block or two.  This is all very hard on anyone who has difficulty getting around.

Sidewalks?  What are sidewalks?

90th Street Conservative

Karen,

Consider yourself lucky.  The alley behind my house is being replaced.  The city dug out the center of the alley and put in new sewers about 7 weeks ago.  The entire center of our alley is dirt and stone.  Very nice indeed.   A nice way to spend time in the backyard over the Summer. Now, we are waiting for the contractor to replace the alley with cement.  We were told they would start the week before Labor Day.  No action yet.

Is it any wonder why as the "90th Street Conservative" I rant about taxes?

All this dirt and the new alley will only cost me $3700.  I did receive a free parking pass to park in front of my own house.  One night, I left it on the front seat.  The next morning I was presented with a $20 parking ticket.  I did get the ticket thrown out after spending an hour in line at City Hall.
