Mayfair Wins Store War, Loses Battle of the Plow

Friday, a friend and I spent the day shopping…at Brookfield Square. Yes, we cheated on Mayfair.

Anyway, I noticed a couple of things while conducting retail therapy. First of all, despite all of the renovations and new stores and restaurants, Brookfield Square still doesn’t compare to Mayfair. This is just my opinion, but I was less than impressed by the offerings at Brookfield Square. Lots of repeats and somewhat mediocre quality that add up to just a “wanna-be” mall. Any stores that Mayfair and Brookfield Square share are infinitely better at Mayfair. It seems like they’re targeting the bargain hunter, but for my money, Southridge would be a better value.

However, Brookfield Square beats Mayfair AND Southridge in one area – they plow better. If you’ve been to Mayfair recently, you’ll see that their method of snow removal is to compact the snow between the rows of parking spaces, creating narrow passageways that are nearly impossible to navigate. Frankly, it’s several accidents waiting to happen.

Brookfield Square completely removes the snow in the parking areas. I have no idea if they deposited it in a corner of a lot, but it was gone and much easier to park.

Now, I’m guessing that Mayfair Management will tell me that Mayfair is so popular that they need to make every single parking space available and can’t afford to dump the snow in a corner of the parking lot. Probably true.

Look, I have no idea what they should do with all of that snow. All I know is that parking was treacherous the other morning at Mayfair at 9:00 am, 10 days before Christmas. I can’t imagine how bad it will be these next two weekends.

Parkers, beware.

If you absolutely must shop I recommend shopping on-line.

Avoid the crowds, the snow and the weather.

Saves on shoe leather and gasoline too.

Besides, malls crowded with surly shoppers frantically going about their holiday consummerism doesn't strike me as fun.

Merry Christmas!

I agree with Tom--shopping online is much less stressful.  However, I prefer Brookfield Square to Mayfair. The variety is mych better, and so are the prices.  I can go to Brookfield Square and buy tools for my husband, Brewers merchandise for my sons, clothing for my mother, and toys for nieces and nephews.

Hey Karen...

I reread my post and I hope I didn't leave the impression that I am a total Scrooge.

Crowds are for parades, Summerfest, sports venues and the like.

Christmas has just become too commercialized for me.

Tom, I totally understand! I'm not very fond of shopping, but it's a necessary evil this time of year. And when my shopping is mostly finished (like it is now), I kind of like to roam a crowded mall and watch stressed-out people in action.

Felon caught with loaded gun at Mayfair

A 26-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm after he was found with a loaded gun outside Mayfair Mall at 9:36 p.m. Feb. 14.

According to police, mall security watched the man on surveillance video arguing with a woman in the mall. As he left the mall and walked to the parking lot, security saw him adjust what appeared to be a gun in his pants waistband.

Once in his car, security saw him take the gun from his waistband and wave it around. He then put the gun back in his waistband, got out of the car and started walking toward the mall. Fearing a shootout of some sort, security notified all security personnel to stay away from the parking lot area and the man.

The man, however, stopped to talk to another man in the parking lot. He appeared to take out the gun and remove a bullet, shine it and then place it back in the gun. The man went back to his car. Police surrounded the man, initiating a felony stop, ordering him at gunpoint to get out of his car.

In his car officers found a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and two ammunition magazines containing 33 rounds.

The man has a lengthy criminal record, according to police, including a 2004 felony conviction for his second offense of manufacture/delivery of cocaine.

During questioning, the man continued to tell officers, "I'm dead. I got my time coming. I take full responsibility for my (expletive)."

He was transported to the Milwaukee County Jail Facility.

Police plan to present the case to the District Attorney's Office for review of charges for felon in possession of a firearm.
