Should Be Doing Homework

A Tosa resident since age 2, Maddie currently is a junior at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School. She is an avid runner, the middle child of three, and a political semi-activist who is thrilled that she will be 18 in time to vote in the upcoming election.

Neutral is for realtors

In the Cue section of today’s (August 5th) Journal Sentinel, there was an article entitled "Words of wisdom" about a Carnegie Mellon professor named Randy Pausch who delivered “The Last Lecture,” a speech he wrote last September after he had been diagnosed with cancer and didn’t have long to live. He just died on July 25th.

Last fall someone sent my mom the video of the lecture, and in it he said that it was really important for parents to let children be creative. Dr. Pausch said that one way to do that was to allow kids to paint their rooms whatever way they want. This timing couldn’t have been anymore perfect for me, because my mom and I had just been arguing about what color to paint my room. While she liked the light blue that it already was, I saw a picture of a room in a magazine with bright, school bus yellow walls and fell in love with it. As you can see, after hearing the lecture she gave in:

So even though it’s not a very big thing, I guess I have Randy Pausch to thank for convincing my mom to let me paint my room such an obnoxious color. If you haven’t thrown out today’s newspaper yet, I would definitely suggest reading the article. It asks different people in the community this question: “What wisdom would you impart to future generations if you knew it was your last chance?” My favorite quote is from Dick Chudnow, the owner of ComedySportz: “If you’re waiting for something to happen, it won’t.”

Love your room!  And you impress me as the type of young woman (from reading your past columns) that would get more from Randy Pausch's lecture than just to be creative with color in your room.

He gave some incredible advice, which I hope to pass along to my own children.

My own advice to them is: You choose if you are a "glass half empty" or glass half full" type of person... it's up to you.

Like Dr. Pausch I too have received bad news from the severeal physicians who are treating me for two icurable diseases that may allow me only months to live.  Unlike Dr. Pausch I do not have a podium, cameras, a book and video market.  However, if I did, I would hope that my "Final Lecture" would have a more serious impact on you than the inspiration to paint your bedroom in the ridiculous manner you chose.

If you need further inspiration perhaps on what sport you might enjoy, I suggest you read or view the remarks left by Lou Gehrig, the baseball player whose final words to the thousands who loved him brought not only immortality to a legend, but international attention to Lou Gehrig's diseasse, the disease he had been diagnosed with that eventually ended his caqreer and his life as well.

You need to re-read the article and write about those things which you are more familar with.

I'm really sorry about your diagnosis and I'm sorry if you took this disrespectfully, becaues that's definitely not how I meant it. I gained a lot more from this lecture than just the bit about painting my room and obviously this wasn't the most important part of Dr. Pausch's lecture, but I just decided to focus in on that little part, I guess. I wanted to share the lecture, and I also wanted to make the point that, like he said that he was grateful that his parents allowed him to express himself, I'm grateful that my mom heard his words and saw the importance of creativity when raising children. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Maddie, I love it! Very bright and sunny! No doubt it will help you wake up for school early and enthusiastic on those cold winter mornings! ;-)

Nice floor, now all you should do is strip the paint off the woodwork.

I think your room looks great, not ridiculous at all, and you totally get the spirit of Randy Pausch's lecture. Anyone who heard it would know that it is about making the most of anything and everything in your life -- everything from how you treat other people to how your decorate your surroundings.

You and your mom wisely took a page from that.

Pausch also said that you have to choose whether you're a Tigger or an Eeyore. I'm betting you're more of a Tigger.

Ray,

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnoses.  I'm grateful for all you have done for Wauwatosa and the preservation of Wauwatosa High School.  You'll be in my prayers.

As for your comments to Maddie, I offer the following suggestion:

Dude, chill out.

If your days are numbered, they'll be brighter.

If they're not, what a bonus.
