The Deal on the Bus

By Maddie McLennon

Despite my lack of a car, I’ve finally found a way of getting around other than mooching off of my mobile friends: the bus! And I’ve discovered that it’s actually a lot better than I thought it would be.

There are a lot of reasons why I think I’ll be taking the bus from now on. First of all, it’s obviously good for the environment, and after reading Maureen Connors Badding’s post, I feel like I should be a little more concerned about doing my part for the world. On the same note, with gas prices the way they are, I’ll gladly pay two dollars per ride.

Another great thing about the bus is meeting new people. This sounds kind of stupid, but a lot of people are much friendlier than you’d think. I also thought it was really fun trying something new. Maybe I just haven’t had enough exciting things to do yet this summer.

Probably the most important reason why I’ll be taking the bus from now on, though, is because otherwise I’ll be confined to a bike. It seems that getting my driver’s license didn’t allow me as much freedom as I thought it would. You kind of need a car to go with it.

Right on! The bus is totally environmentally friendly and economical. And you're right, people ARE often friendly.

We desperately need reminders of this, and less fear and suspicion, if we're ever going to actually move forward on mass transit in southeastern Wisconsin. Hopefully we won't wait until gas prices hit $10 a gallon to do it.

Good for you!

My older daughter, now 22, wrote an article for her high school paper on how to ride the bus after discovering that none of her friends knew how!

So glad you're enjoying the bus, Maddie! When I worked downtown, I loved taking the bus because I could relax and read all the way home instead of fighting traffic. Sadly, the routes are quickly drying up. When I was on jury duty last summer, I was one of very few jurors taking the bus to and from the courthouse (and they gave us free bus fare!). I soon found out why: it's now a several-block walk to the bus stop, and my bus only came every 45 minutes. That's pretty pitiful service for a city our size. We need our service restored, but we also need people like you spreading the word that riding the bus is a convenient, economical alternative, not a last resort. Thanks for spreading the word!

Ride the bus, man!

Believe it or not, when I was 8-years-old my parents let me ride the bus to downtown to either go to the big Milwaukee library or the public museum.  Mom always gave me bus fare and a buck or two for lunch at the Woolworth lunch counter.  (That is a clue to how ancient I am).  I’m not sure parents would let their kids do that nowadays – but I digress.

I don't ride the bus in Milwaukee anymore except for Summerfest.

When my wife and I travel to other cities we always take public transportation - it's cheap, easy and always an adventure.

I have been to countless cities - many of them smaller than Milwaukee - and their public transportation is always better.

I’ll make a prediction.  When gasoline reaches 6 bucks a gallon you’ll see public transportation in Milwaukee undergo major improvements.

Is it really economical?  Lets say it is 8 miles to downtown.  Lets even round that up to 10.  20 miles roundtrip.  That in my car is less then one gallon of gas.  Each way to ride the bus is $2.00 (so for all you democrats out there that is $4.00 roundtrip).  Add to the equation that the bus stops every 30 yards or so, you have to wait 20 minutes for it to pick you up when it is late, and someone again please tell me why the e bus is such a great thing? (unless of course you like the chance of a mob beating).
