CHRISTMAS PART ONE

By Laura Beyer
Friday, Dec 5 2008, 01:08 PM

Hello everyone and of course, Happy Holidays....  I would have said Merry Christmas, but of course, I am trying to cover everyone and their beliefs as well.

I wanted to make these posts more of an open forum.  Get everyone's opinions, so to speak.  The first topic of the season which is so important is SAFETY.

It appears as if there are so many stories regarding robberies, Black Friday nightmares, etc, that I believe that we as a community can come up with very simple ideas on how to stay safe not only this year, but for future years as well.

I can honestly admit, I do have around 10 purses.  Maybe more, but that's not what I am here to talk about.  I want to talk about everyone else's purses.  I think something that really gets my goat, so to speak, is how laxed some women are about their purses.  Sometimes when I am walking through the grocery store, I find purses on a cart, opened wide, where the woman has walked away.  Even if it's for a moment, I worry.  I mean, if you have ever seen the inside of a purse, it carries usually everything but the kitchen sink.

My first safety tip of the holiday season is this.  Leave your purse at home.  I know it may seem like "Mission Impossible", but I feel it is the first step in keeping us ladies safe.  If you ever see me, you will never see me carrying a purse. You probably wonder how I survive.  Well, let me tell you.

When I wake up in the morning, I get ready like the rest of the world.  Then, when I leave the house, I put my driver's license, cash and credit card in my back pocket.  Once in a while if I am in a "questionable" area, or feel unsafe, I will take all of the items from my back pocket and throw them inside of my shirt, in one side of my "unmentionables".  Then, in the largest pocket in my pants or jacket, I throw my cell phone.  Finally, in the other front pocket, I throw my keys.   That is it.  If you don't believe me, just ask my kids or check me out at Barnes and Nobles reading someday.  Believe me, this transformation did not happen overnight.  It has just become so convenient that it works for me.

Now, for those of you that cannot certain live without your purse, how about an easier way?  Instead of not taking a purse, how about when you get to where you are going, you only put what you need in your pockets.  Then, throw your purse in the trunk of your car.  I mean, if you really think about it, what else do you need when you are in any establishment?

Another crazy idea, if you are going shopping, alone, how about you carry an old purse which is empty.  I know this sounds silly but instead of carrying a purse full of identification and personal items, carry an empty one .  I know this sounds strange, but honestly, if you are a victim of a robbery, the guy or girl only wants your valuables, especially your purse.  Fill it with something slightly heavy, so it does not appear to be empty.  Let's take one more victim off the streets and make it a Merry Christmas this year

When you go shopping or out by yourself, why not leave all of your valuables at home.  The less gold, diamonds and jewelry you have on, the less the crooks will notice you.  Throw on a pair of jeans, a sweater, jacket, boots and whatever else it will take to keep you warm.  Try not to bring too much attention to yourself.   No need to dress like you are going to a ball, church or anywhere else special during these trips.

Although this may not occur, what is the best reaction to a robbery situation?  Give that person whatever he or she is demanding.  Do not fight.  I know I have seen stories where the victim has fought and won.  In fact, a friend of mine who's car was almost stolen chased the would be robbers down the highway, called the police and was able to catch the criminals. Yet, not every story ends up so successful.

Lastly, if and when you decide to venture out for your purchases, try to find a buddy to go along with.  Even your Grandma would do.  If you think about thieves, it's best to put them in the same category as a pack of wild animals.  Have you ever seen the nature channel?  Remember how that pack of wolves always singles out the most vulnerable baby and goes in for the kill?  That is exactly how criminals work.  They look for that one woman, or man, and take what they want.  Sad but true.

There are so many other ways to keep yourself safe. Please feel free to comment and add your own safety tips below so that we as a community can have a more safe and peaceful holiday season.

I'm always cautious when it comes to shopping.  Due to loose fitting pants, I don't like to leave things in my back pockets, so I have my designated pockets.  Smokes, lighter (I know, I should quit)chapstick and money go in one front pocket, wallet and receipts go in the other (don't like to keep my money in my wallet).  With the car, I hide my small cd book of burned copies under my seat, big cd book goes in the trunk.  Keys are the only thing that go in my back pocket since if someone stole that at a store.. they'd have a heck of a time trying to find which car out of the thousands there is mine.

Laura, I too have seen women in stores with their purses wide open in carts. Ive even approached them, suggested nicely that they should keep an eye on their purses and got blown off. When I use a shopping cart, I put my purse in the child seat and hook the child safety belt through the handles of my purse and lock it. I figure if they want my purse, they will get the shopping cart too, which should slow them down. In my car, I keep my purse in the space between the passenger seat and the drivers seat. I've even been known to hook my seatbelt through the handles, thus locking it in place.I'm very concerned about this as I'm an older person and, therefore, an "easy mark". Its really a matter of keeping your wits about you. Oh yes, I've also read that if a thief tells you to hand over your purse, throw it as far as you can. This hint came from the police. Hope these ideas help someone.

Laura,

I agree with you 100%. I stopped using my purse about 2 years ago. All I need is my debit card, cash, and drivers license. West Allis can be a safe AND unsafe place to live. You really have to know where and where not to go and ALWAYS keep your guard up even if you feel safe. Expect the unexpected. Stay away from the Pick N Save on 68th & National. Nothing but trouble there. People are geeting robbed in broad daylight.

I like going to the Pick N Save on 84th & Blumound. Nicer store and a better class of people (somewhat).

Remember....keep your doors & windows locked and your eyes & ears open.

Peace out LAURIE!!!!     ;)

I carry a small purse but when I go to crowded places I dont take it or lock it in the trunk of my car.I do like you take my id, cash, debit care and lip balm! I dont understand some women who have these gigantic purses. Some say they have stuff for their kids, but i have a kid, and dont carry a large purse. I have my wallet, lip balm, a bunch of change, business cards, and receipts if i need to save them.

We saw about a month ago a guy who left his wallet in the seat of a grocery cart. The cart was by itself in the aisle. We almost took it to the customer service desk because it was sitting there for a couple of minutes so we thought maybe it was lost. FInally the guy came out of the liquor dept. My hubby told the guy put it in your pocket, somebody could rip it off, so guys do it too.

Hey everyone...

all of the ideas above are awesome....  Hopefully it will help even one person from theft this year.

W.A.M.

your comment made me laugh.. how in the world did you ever break your purse habit??

PS: love the pet name... :)

Just use common sense...don't resemble a victim cowering from the masses and clutching your purse in anticipation of ever present terror.  Personally, I don't avoid any part of town, any store, any entertainment venue, etc. because of crime or fear of crime. When people stay away, avoid any place, and alter life styles  because of fear and expectations of harm, the bad guys/gals win.

I must be a "somewhat" lower class of person  since I shop at the Pick n' Save at 68th and National on a regular basis. I do so  during both daylight and nighttime hours.

W.A.M.

Just what is your definition of "somewhat better class of people?" More curiously, how can you tell someone is a better class of people?  Just wondering!!!

One other thing, although the advice to surrender your belongings is prudent, it is NEVER prudent to allow/permit/comply with an assailant to move you to a secondary location. At that point that you should resist verbally, loudly and physically. If you are removed to the secondary location, you're going to be in worse trouble. Better to stand your ground; there's a reason why the criminal wants to move you!!!

W.A.M. apparently shops at that same Pick 'n Save that I shop at for the same reasons he gave.  In fact, it's likely that he shops at the exact same time that I'm in there because  my mere presence at a store infinitely increases the 'quality' of the clientelle for those few minutes.

How many of you can say that while shopping at a store, you've actually chased a punk shoplifter for about a quarter mile and dragged him to the ground before the cops arrived?  I can because I did exactly that.

I was at Menards when I saw a fat, young security guard from Kohl's chasing a punk shoplifter across the parking lot headed towards Highway 100.  I asked the fat guy if he needed help and he said yes.  I chased the punk across Highway 100, through the Burger King parking lot and weaved through the cars in the Target parking lot where he was looking for his getaway car.  He eventually ran out of steam, but not me.  I did my best Ray Nitschke impression on that punk and pasted him on the grass right by the store entrance to Target (before they remodeled the store).  Within a minute, two WAPD squads were there and I transferred juristiction to those fine men in blue.  I left the scene and went on my way knowing that I did my good deed for the day.  Trust me, it was freakin' awesome and the adrenaline was flowing through my bloodstream at about a mile a minute.  No, I didn't go back to Kohl's to seek any reward or recognition for my successful efforts.  I was more interested in finishing up the project at home that I was working on at the time.

Quality clientele,or persons for that matter, do not recommend www.amren.com as a suggested website. I believe you did that once. White supremacy is not a quality.

December 8, 2008 3:50 PM

STUBBORNOLDMAN

I have never heard of that www.amren.com website that you mentioned, MORTIFIEDWESTALLISRESIDENT.  If you can attribute any of my posts in which I referenced any web page with that base URL, please let me know.  I believe you are wrong (GASP!) when you wrote that I recommended that particular web site.

I agree with your contention that 'common sense' is a great 'weapon' to have and use.

If I am a white supremacist as you are implying without explicitly saying so (nice tapdance), why did I NOT mention the race of the punk that I tackled?  YOU, my lefty-liberal friend, are the one who first played the 'race card', not me.  I can't ignore the irony that YOU seem to know more about this white-supremacist web site than I (the alleged-white-supremacist) do.

Laura's post has NOTHING to do with race despite your attempt to use hate-filled rhetoric for the umpteeth time as you always seem to do in response to my posts.  Laura's post has to do with what actions people take to prevent becoming a victim of crime.  There are good people and bad people in this world and I'm one of the good ones despite your presumption that I'm not.  I actually DID something that Summer afternoon to help the WAPD nab this punk and possibly to transform him into a law-abiding member of society.  Maybe my actions caused this punk to 'see the light' and change his life so that he didn't graduate into the world of purse-snatchers, chronic-complainers, or worse, a liberal, soft-on-crime Democrat (sorry, I couldn't resist).  Most people would appreciate my efforts in this particular case, but you seem to be reluctant to do the same.

The real point is that you can't assume that good people like me are always going to be around to assist you if/when a purse-snatcher decides to strike.  You have to use common sense and maybe make some small changes in your daily life to make yourself look less 'desirable'.

Good idea to post about safety around the holidays, Laura!  Things like the death at Walmart where that poor guy got trampled are insane and should never happen!  What could you possibly need so badly that you have to kill someone to get it?  Seriously people...trampling down the store clerk for a Christmas present?  I know I'm not the only one who finds that totally crazy.  There are some wacked out people out there...

As far as purses go, depending on where I'm going, I'll do any number of the above suggestions -- I leave my purse at home, lock it in the trunk, and I've worn fanny packs to make things a little trickier for a would-be thief.  Even when I DO have my purse, I never carry my checkbook (got the debit card for that), and I only bring the membership/ID/credit cards for places I'm going to.

I agree with Stubborn and Mortified that common sense is one of your best weapons.  And be aware of your surroundings.  You might be able to keep from being a victim if you pay attention to folks who might be hovering around without an obvious purpose...don't park way in the back of the lot where the lighting might not be as good.

Hey MORTIFIED,

not sure where the shot at STUBBORN came from, but I do have to agree with him, this post was not about race, it was about all of us giving each other tips on how to keep save this holiday season.  I appreciate you adding your comment about never allowing a criminal to move you to a secondary location.  Thanks for that!!!

STUBBORN,

I am going to tell the Packers to give you a call.  I think you are a free agent, right?  Great job catching the "perp".. I would have probably jumped in my car and gave him a slight tap... hahaha

JULIE,

thanks for your comment.  I also read that story about the poor guy getting trampled and killed at Walmart.  I was horrified.  I can't imagine the pain and suffering his family is going through.  How aweful.  That is exactly the reason I won't shop on Black Friday.  Nothing is worth my safety.

Thanks everyone so far for your comments.  I believe we are keeping more and more folks safe.. :)

Stubborn is right. There was no mention of race until MORTIFIED put her two worthless little cents in the mix. Stubborn & I go shop at the Pick N' Save in Tosa to avoid low class people like yourself at the one on 68th & National.

Never heard of the website www.amren.com??? Please click on your former posts (page 48 - fourth entry)...I used to check out your suggested websites until I clicked on that one and was horrified. It spoke volumes.

The post wasn't really a comment on race, it's a comment on persons who smuggly make value judgments of quality persons and "better class of  people". What standards do they apply  for "quality low class persons"?

OK, I'll check it out.  It's fair to say that this amren site is not and never was on my list of 'favorites'.

The archives of my posts revealed this when I was searching for that post of mine that you referenced:

Reducing crime and more aggressive prosecution of offenders will solve many of the problems in this area. www.amren.com/.../color.pdf

I have no idea what the content of that particular link was all about since it didn't post the actual URL, but I can probably make a good guess.

Getting back on topic, did you see that published story in the WauwatosaNow where a woman's purse was stolen at gunpoint on 74th & Center about a week ago?  The race of the subject was not published in this story, but you know the papers have been 'caught' twice in the very recent past of sanitizing similar stories when a black guy was the suspect.  I wonder why?  Keep your eyes open, ladies...

I really want to avoid this blog from becoming a point of contention, especially during the holidays.  If something that STUBBORN wrote was in the past, why bring it up today?  He never mentioned race.  Holding on to a grudge only keeps someone else in control of your emotions and feelings..

This blog was to help keep people safe.  Let's stick to the subject at hand.

STUBBORN,

thanks for the link.  I appreciate your input.

MORTIFIED,

I appreciate your input as well.

The best way to avoid getting your purse snatched is to stay home and shop online.  I don't do ALL of my shopping online, but I have noticed a gradual transition towards MORE online shopping in my particular case.

I don't hold grudges...I do, and always will, defend myself and my neighbors if anyone refers to (or implies) MY neighborhood as containing a "lower class of people." The whole description is extremely subjective and baseless. If you unjustifiably attack me with unsupportable garbage I will respond.
