Tosa Trivia

By Tom Gaertner
Monday, Oct 27 2008, 05:05 AM

Happy Monday.

Here's a three-part trivia question.

Colonel Hart's on State Street is a popular watering hole. The Colonel also serves terrific food.

What is the significance of the name to Wauwatosa?

What was the name of the establishment before it was Colonel Hart's?

What was the name of the establishment before that?

I'll publish any responses along with the correct answers in a  couple of days.

Ladies and Gentlemen Take my Advice...

By Tom Gaertner
Wednesday, Oct 15 2008, 05:19 AM

...pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

With all due respect to the sage advice of Dr. Sidney Freedman from the television series M*A*S*H* - please keep your pants on.

You might want to check out the ice at the Muellner Building located at Tosa's Hart Park.

Tosa curling is just around the corner.

The Wauwatosa Curling Club (WCC) has been a fixture in Wauwatosa since 1921.

I believe that would qualify the club as a significant part of Tosa's historical, cultural and social fabric.

Curling has been a part of Hart Park's Muellner Building since the early 1940s when the structure was built - specifically as a curling venue.  Tosa curlers contributed to the cost of construction.

Nowadays the building is enjoyed by multiple users yet the WCC remains the city's longest-term tenant as occupant of the basement - and during the winter months - the large hall.

There are a couple of open houses scheduled for this month.

Check-out the sport that's sweeping the nation.

Good curling!

Tom

By the way - who can tell me how the Muellner Building got its name?

I'll post any responses in a couple of days.

Class Reunion - Updated

By Tom Gaertner
Thursday, Oct 9 2008, 02:25 PM

The Tosa East Red Raiders hosted Brookfield East at Hart Park last Saturday - defeating the Spartans (37-35) in the Raider's homecoming with a fourth quarter rally.

The class of 1968 was there to cheer them on.

Click on any image to enlarge

Not my class but my lovely wife's.  They were celebrating their 40th class reunion.  Yikes!

How many of you remember what your were up to in 1968?

How about the war in Vietnam?

There was the battle of Khe Sanh, massacre at My Lai and Tet Offensive.

Future Senator and Presidential Candidate John McCain was a guest at the Hanoi Hilton.

US ground forces reached their peak at about 550,000.

By year-end total US deaths surpassed the 30,000 mark.

As ugly as that was it gets worse.

The Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia.

Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated.

North Korea seized the USS Pueblo and imprisoned its crew.

Saddam Hussein became Vice Chairman of the Revolutionary Council in Iraq after a coup d’état.

The Democratic National Convention in Chicago hosted a full-scale riot - replete with the Illinois National Guard in a staring role.

Sounds to me like a helluva year, eh?

And you figured the little events of this year were exciting.

On a brighter note -

Green Bay defeated Oakland in Super Bowl II.

Stanley Kubrick's - 2001: A Space Odyssey premiered.

The price of a gallon of gasoline was around 27 to 34 cents and you could go to a movie for $1.50.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed above 100 for the first time and oil was discovered in Alaska.

Apollo 8 orbited the moon and after an investment of $5 million (1960s dollars) the first ATM made its debut.

Music of that year was generally awesome.

Raquel Welch (and my future wife) were hot.

So last weekend I got to hang-out with a bunch of people I didn't know really very well - initially anyway.  After a couple of days of visiting  - my conclusion?

I was impressed.

Impressed at how many Raider alumni attended.

Impressed at how many make Tosa their home.

The notion I got to move here almost two and a half decades-ago has been reinforced.

Tosa is a great place to grow-up, come of age, raise a family and indulge your grandchildren.

Our Wauwatosa, to thee we sing,

Thy glorious victories, ever will bring

Pride to our beating hearts, loyal and free,

Our Alma Mater, praise to thee!

U! Rah! Rah! Wau-wa-tosa!

Update

For any of you who have been following the comments made to this post by Tosa's Ray Py - here are pictures of the East High School tower:

This is the picture I was looking for.  It was taken by a photog who followed a fire truck to this scene where there was a small welding fire in some debris.  He shot the tower being taken down on a June afternoon in 1974.  Actually most people in the city were unaware that the tower was to be demolished until this picture appeared.  I have never been able to find the single person in authority who approved the work.  It was estimated at the time that it would have cost $25,000 to maintain the tower. Estimates today of its replacement are in the millions.

Tosa Trivia

By Tom Gaertner

This is a weird bit of gastronomical trivia from the Mayfair Mall of yore.

You could find a kettle of this on the salad bar of a certain restaurant.

Name the bubbling contents of the kettle and the the restaurant that served it.

I'll publish your responses and the correct answer in a couple of days.

Wauwatosa's current local paper is WauwatosaNOW and is delivered - free-for-nothing - with your JournalSentinel every Thursday.

The on-line edition is pretty cool.  Moreover, it features the most talented collection of Community Voices - of ANY of the MyCommunityNOW.com web pages. (Tosa rules - everyone else drools)

Who can name the old-fashioned, print edition, Wauwatosa newspaper that was in circulation at the close of 1976?

I'll publish your responses in a couple of days.

Tom

The parent of a couple of popular Hollywood personalities previously owned the buildings that were demolished for the Best Buy store located on Mayfair Road.

I was acquainted with him when my office was located in the Mayfair Tower.  He was a delightful personality with a dry wit.

Who was he?

I'll post your answers in a couple of days.

Tom

You can read the answer here.

Tosa Trivia and the Mayoral Race - Winner!

By Tom Gaertner
Tuesday, Feb 26 2008, 11:44 PM

For details on the winning submission go to the bottom of the post-

Before you get your undies in a knot thinking I am pandering with another acid witticism in the title of this post -

I am not.

Take note that Tosa Trivia sometimes gets more views than anything I have to say about the mayoral race.

I think that speaks volumes about where Tosans place their priorities.  But I digress.

I hope you find today's trivia to be challenging.

If you can correctly identify the answer there is a very valuable prize up for grabs.

No run-of-the-mill mouse pad or coffee mug from WauwatosaNOW.

Instead you could win a certain highly prized and coveted mayoral yard sign.

Visitors to the TTS know what I am talking about.

Nope, not a Stepaniak yard sign.

No, not a Didier yard sign.

You can win your very own Joeythelovesponge For Mayor yard sign!

Imagine being the first person on your block to have one of these.

If I had one, I would be afraid to stick it in the yard for fear that one or the other of the two other Tosa candidates might swipe it when I wasn't looking.  They would be jealous.

Incidentally, Joeythelovesponge claims to be the third candidate for mayor of Tosa Town.

In the interest of full and fair disclosure I will remind you readers that Joey did make a campaign promise of sorts - that if elected - I would get to be the town Jaegermeister.

That is a sorely tempting proposition which would seriously stretch the elaborate and carefully-enforced Blogger Code of Ethics. (All 200,000+ entries thereof).

Alas, Joey didn't get his important mayoral paperwork in on time so he will not be on the ballot and thankfully I will not be ethically-challenged.

Seriously, a trip to Joey's website might prove to be a source of entertainment.

There is Joey's Repository of Haiku

If you visit Joey's Store of Trinkets you can purchase all manner of Joey stuff - including the entire clothing line.

There is a good cause involved as well.

Joey has promised that all profits from the sale of Joey stuff go to the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation.  Not my promise, his.

The purchase of Joey stuff might actually be a productive use of your own money that is being returned to you under the guise of economic relief.

Brett Favre's wife + breast cancer = noble cause

In my view - much better than letting Washington spend it.

Ok - here's the trivia question:

In 1976, what emporium of fine dining was located at 93rd and Bluemound?

(Alright, I know it's not exactly Tosa - but it's close enough)

Submit your entries and I'll publish them along with the correct answer in a couple of days.

The first correct answer wins the authentic Joeythelovesponge mayoral yard sign.

(Wouldn't it be ironic if one or the other of the two candidates won this sign with a correct submission?)

Tom

Note to Joey - I hope you appreciate any increased traffic from this shameless, cheap, obtuse and blatantly commercial endorsement I am giving you and the Joey stuff I purchased this past weekend.  I'm going to take some hits for this. Someone is going to call me a Joeythelovesponge flack.

Good luck with your write-in campaign.

Gotta run, I hear incoming....

________________________________________________________________________________________________

The correct answer is-

TOSAQT got it correctly...

Yep. One of these.  This picture is of the Chips in Merrill, WI

In 1976, five hamburgers and your choice of two small drinks or a large order of fries would set you back $1.49.

QT - Contact me as to how you want to take delivery of your valuable prize.

Are you candidate Didier?

Maybe candidate Stepaniak?

I wonder?   Congrats.  Tom

Tosa Trivia - Tosan Ray Py Throws the Gauntlet!

By Tom Gaertner
Friday, Jan 18 2008, 08:41 AM

What Wauwatosa personality received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress?

I'll post all of the submitted answers on Friday - including the correct answer.

Good Luck and Go Pack!

Tom

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Read the submission below - Fritztino wins with the correct answer.

The nominee for best supporting actress, played the young girlfriend of William Holden in the film Sunset Boulevard

Her name was Nancy Olson and she was in the Wauwatosa High School class of 1946.

Only four years after her high school graduation, she was playing major roles in Hollywood.

Despite major roles in large films, big screen stardom eluded her, and after marrying composer Alan Jay Lerner, she played second leads in a few films before retiring from acting. After their divorce, she made a return to acting, and started her successful stint with Disney in 1960's Pollyanna. She made four other films for Disney, including The Absent Minded Professor (1961), which is better known to the younger generation as the original version of Robin Williams' 1997 hit film, Flubber (Olson appears in an uncredited cameo in the new film).

Her post-Disney career is unremarkable, with minor roles in Airport 1975 (1974) and Making Love (1982). Television appearances include 1977's Kingston: Confidential (starring Raymond Burr) and 1982's Paper Dolls (opposite Lloyd Bridges).

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Read Ray Py's addes post.

Dang, Ray. You are making this most challenging.

I haven't a clue who this might be.

Any submissions???

Valuable new prizes are at stake.

Go Pack!

Tosa Trivia - Answer and Winner

By Tom Gaertner
Thursday, Dec 20 2007, 09:14 PM

A Trivia riddle.

I was born in Germany in 1881 and died in America in 1936.

I played a significant role in Wauwatosa's history.

Who am I and precisely what did I do?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

WOW!  Nobody got this wrong.

Aside from the comments posted below I received a pile of emails - all with correct answers.

Dr. Werner Hegemann was instrumental in designing Wauwatosa's Highlands.  You can read all about it here.

Again, Beanhead was the first person to post the correct answer.  Good for you Bean.  If you want to collect your stocking stuffer you know the drill.

There is a development occurring far to the west of us on a remaining Pabst Farms property.

I wonder if it will become a lasting gem of urban planning that the Highlands has become?

The comments board is open.

Have a very Merry Christmas everyone.

Tom

P.S. If you have a MORE DIFFICULT Tosa Trivia challenge you'd like published send me an email.  Someone needs to put this Beanhead to the test!

Here's some more Tosa Trivia coming at ya.

On the southeast corner of 76 and Center Streets is situated a Walgreens.

Walgreens gutted, renovated and built-out the structure that previously stood at that site.

Can you name the two principle businesses that occupied that building - beginning with the most recent AND the business before then?

You must answer both correctly to win.

Tosa Trivia players who can correctly answer the question can win VALUABLE prizes like an official WauwatosaNOW.com mouse pad, coffee cup and some other goodies.

If you have a Tosa Trivia question you'd like posted send me an email.  I won't identify you unless you wish.

Tosa Trivia

Thursday, Oct 25 2007, 07:28 PM

Let's see how many of you know your local trivia.

There are no prizes for a correct answer - just the admiration of your fellow readers for your capacity to retain mundane and generally useless information.

Don't surprised if a trick question appears from time to time.

If you have some trivia to share - send me an email and I'll post it for you.  I won't use your name unless you want me to.

I'll go first.

What was the name of the tavern that previously stood on the southwest corner of Highway 100 and Potter Road?
