Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

The Disappointment of Sarah? (Post Debate Update)

By Tom Gaertner
Thursday, Oct 2 2008, 03:51 PM

I learned something new this week when a colleague introduced me to the term word salad.

If you go to the all-knowing internet you will learn that this is defined as a string of words that vaguely resembles language, and may or may not be grammatically correct, but is utterly meaningless.

The friend suggested the following as an example-

Couric:  What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?

Palin:  Well, let's see.  There's, of course in the great history of America there have been rulings, that's never going to be absolute consensus by every American.  And there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there.  So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but...

Couric:  Can you think of any?

Palin:  Well, I could think of...any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level.  Maybe I would take issue with.  But, you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a vice president, if I'm so privileged to serve, wouldn't be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.

One word - vacuous.

Maybe I'm just a long-suffering McCain fan that had high expectations and got smacked between the eyes with a running mate this is - well - disappointing.

How about Exxon v. Baker?  It happened under your watch as governor.  Remember?  It cost your fellow Alaskans a big chunk of change.

Am I the only one that cringes in pain every time this candidate opens her mouth?

Sheesh.

For the sake of John McCain she better hit one out of the park tonight.

Stay tuned.

Tom

10/02/08  9:55 PM - Some post debate observations:

Good Job!.  Not an out of the park slam - but several good base-hits.

Style points for being folksy.  Hey - Joe Six Pack - you're darn right you betcha - we wantcha to support those soccer moms, eh.  I love it!

Ample use of Reaganisms - There you go again - doggone it Beacon of hope.  You get the drift.

Hey Sarah - some unsolicited advice from someone who was on a high school debate squad.

Rule #1 - Never let the moderator redirect you back to the original question when you fail to answer it the first time.

Rule #2 - Give-up the freaking sound bites.

Rule #3 - Stop looking at your notes and STOP using the word also.  You are making me nuts.

Rule #4 - Being perky is no substitute for command of the language and facts.  You need to practice more.  Oh, wait, there aren't any more debates.  I guess you're off the hook.

Thanks for alleviating 4 weeks of growing doubts.

Bottom line -

Lost no votes, gained some, appeared confident.

Stay tuned.

Tom

Having spent most of my adult life in the company of people with schizophrenia,I'm familiar with word salad and it does seem to fit some of Palin's recent attempts to evade questions. Here's an alternate take on Palinisms in which some of her recent statements are presented in the form of poetry. This works, too.

90th Street Conservative

Well, Gas Pains,

Which of the two better connected with real Americans?  As a conservative, I am quick to admit there is plenty of blame to go around for the financial mess.  Real change means having an outsider as part of the ticket.  Biden is a 35 year Senator, Obama is a 35 day Senator.  Perhaps someone who deals with everyday issues needs a real look.  The Palin kids go to public school in Alaska.  The Obama kids go to a $20,000 per child per year school in Chicago.  Who gets what real Americans are going through?

90th Street that is the proverbial $1000 question.

Lessee how the polling goes in the remaining weeks leading-up to the election.

You’re obviously a Conservative (your handle belies your leanings).

Me?  Not so much.

In case you haven't figured this out yet I am not a party sycophant (polite word for shill).  The radical right with all of their disdain for science and talk about how the earth only being 5000 years-old frankly gives me the creeps.  But, I digress.

Admittedly - I predictably vote Republican - but not always.

My sense is that to win the election John McCain has to win-over what I call the big fat middle.

Ms. Palin did a good job tonight of not alienating the middle.

So my advice to Ms. Palin would be to stop being so perky – I’m unimpressed by the cheerleader persona.  She needs to be more than just folksy.

I am not stupid so I think it is going to take some heavy lifting to prove she’s really up to the task of possibly becoming leader of the free world.

I remain skeptical.

If her handlers assume we are all just a bunch of equally vapid Joe Six Packs it will backfire.  Big time.

(Unsolicited advice to the RNC is drop the pathetic euphemisms).

More to know as the next several weeks unfold.

We'll have to see.

Well, Well, Well!

Lets see we have here..William Ayers - Weatherman Terrorist whose home served as the birthplace of Obamas political career and who stated, he did not regret his terrorist activities; Jeremiah Wright of "God Damn America" fame - Obama's Mentor and Pastor; Tony Rezko - Obama's Real Estate Advisor and Federal Criminal; Kwame Kilpatrick - Obama's "Great Friend" and someone who he expects to confer with a great deal in the future (May 2008) and now Joe Biden - his running mate who is a plagarist and stated that Obama is not fit to be President but later stated, John McCain is the only Republican worthy of being President!

Tom, I had a similar reaction. She did a good job. Her lack of smoothness with language doesn't bother so much because I struggle sometimes with speech.

The lack of substance is something else, though I don't think it's a problem for the conservative base. Using contentions without support for those contentions works IF you "connect" with people on an emotional level, as 90th St. mentioned. It worked for Palin. I don't think it's working for Mrwarrenave.

But I'm not convinced that connection and instant comfort is best way to select a candidate. I wouldn't select my accountant or auto mechanic on the basis of how easy they were to be around or how much they were like me. I want 'em to be different from me, or I wouldn't need 'em.

Mrwarrenavenue...

I don't disagree.

You know, last night as I was watching the debate (and alternately fidgeting, cringing and hurling an occasional expletive in the general direction of the television) I had two reoccurring thoughts.

The first was the irony of success being measured largely by the avoidance of a train wreck.

The second was how much I longed for someone like Condi Rice to be behind the lectern.

According to polling by the CNN/Opinion Research Corp:

  • 51 percent say Democratic Sen. Joe Biden wins vice presidential debate
  • Republican Gov. Sarah Palin exceeds expectations, 84 percent say
  • Palin beats Biden on likability, 54-36
  • 87 percent say Biden is qualified for job, 42 percent say Palin is

"Perhaps someone who deals with everyday issues needs a real look."

When did being common become a predictor of success?  Sorry, when people use words like "folksy" I want to puke.  Funny how that got spun into a positive, yet the word "elite" became something negative.

Guess what, I DON'T want the president or VP to be like me!  I want them to be more intelligent.   I want them to come from excellent schools where they learned difficult subjects.  The "guy down the street"  is often mediocre, so why do you look for this quality in a candidate?   Why do you think that you can fix the country's problems by being a "Washington Outsider"  Doesn't that just mean you haven't stepped up to the plate?  The GOP has managed to convince some of you that having no opinion is better than having a different one.  It's getting to the point where I feel ashamed to be a registered Republican.

Bravo, BECKKL!

(Only part of your post that I can't identify with is the registered Republican part.)
