Icons & Nostalgia

By Peter Hart
Wednesday, Nov 29 2006, 06:41 PM
After seeing the Village Voice's blog on Hectors and seeing the word Icon, it made
me think of what I would consider a Tosa Icon's and Tosa Nostalgia.

Here is a short list.
Gilles- goood eating! Great custard. Copps on Appleton (not in tosa but the
best onion rings)

Neso's barbershop (I think it was "Tim's before Neso's) but because Neso cut
my hair when I was a kid it makes my list.

George Webb's I use to get a donut and chocolate milk to warm up while helping
the Hoover's delivery the Sunday Journal or when I got my Sentinel route.

Drews (Dime Store) good for Penny candy, costumes and birthday presents.

31 Flavors - first time I had ice cream other than vanilla, chocolate or strawberry.
(Orange sherbet & Rocky Road were my favorite)

Nieman's Home made candies- expensive but fun to look at.
Wares Bicycle shop (where I got my Blue Schwinn one-speed/banana seat)
Ace Hardware in the Lefeber building (great place to get replacement glass windows)
Rankes gas station (71st & State)
Chinese Pagoda (71st & North)
Walters (70th & North)
Dutchlin Dairy (onion mounds) I think it was on 80th & Capital

One's that didn't make list
Chancery - Even though I worked there in the late 70's I still remember exchanging
pennys as a kid when it was Wauwatosa Saving.
Colonel Hart's remember as Pep's (first time in a bar-was 16 collecting for my Sentinel route)
Hectors - remembered as "The Back Porch" (dark & smoky, filled which old guys drinking mixed drinks)

Nostalgia-
After hearing about the recycling center-I remember Mr. Ritter's environmental Ed class and
paper drives - collecting tons (literally) of newspapers from around the neighborhood
and delivering them to the dump (for extra credit). It helped my C- average.

AFS Pizza Sales - We actually made the pizzas and delivered them the same day
(by the way-the pizza's tasted pretty bad)

Hamburger & Hot Dog days at St. Bernard's - After eating PB&J for months, a plain
hamburger or hot dog (10 cent) tasted great.
Skipping out of Sunday mass @ St. Bernard's. We would hang behind National, wait for mass
to almost let out and run in to get a weekly church program to see which priest said mass.
(we usually were tested on such info)

Dress-up/down days at St. Bernard's Mostly I dressed down.
A&P on 72th & North - the smell of their freshly ground coffee
Milk's on Milwaukee Ave near Mower Ct. (opened and closed in the 70's)
great malts and hamburgers. Milk's closed and became a sub shop for awhile.

Hoyt Pool-great place to grow up (see "Day in the life Blog" June06)
Sledding on Hanson Hill & Alice Hill (now Hanson is closed) and Alice is too dangerous
Ice Rink @ Mayfair (excessable parking as well)
Snow days and making money shoving sidewalks.
Kookie Cookie House @ Capital Court & Gingerbread machine
Midnight Mass @ St. Bernards (even after going to mass 6days/wk for years it was a treat)
Breaking ice on the Menominee River with the Alice St gang (should be an extreme sport)
Stocking hats (that double at weapons), snowball fights and ice skating at Lincoln & Hart Park
Homemade scarves that you sucked on for hydration.

Got others, email me and I will share your Tosa Icons & Nostalgia

Ten things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving

By Peter Hart
Tuesday, Nov 21 2006, 08:38 AM
1. Halloween is over and we are not turkeys.
2. We don't have to listen to anymore campaign ads
3. That we have the luxury to worry if our food could make us sick
4. That we have friends to make us laugh (if you don't have friends, be nicer to your acquaintances)
5. That Dollar Liquor is coming to Tosa.
6. That MMSD is probably done dumping for the year (they have met their quota)
7. That NASCAR & "Dancing with the Stars" are over
8. That tax bills don't come out until December (where's the closest EZ loan?)
9. That Mo's Irish Pub is opening next month. (Yanni's & Suburbia will be busy after midnight)
10. That I live in Wauwatosa. Remember "What happens in Tosa usually ends up on your tax bill"
11. That I still have hair--too bad it's on my back.

Dollar Liquor to open in Tosa in December

By Peter Hart
Monday, Nov 20 2006, 10:26 PM
Dollar Liquor, a subsidiary of Dollar Value Stores has been given
tempory business permit by the City of Wauwatosa. Dollar Liquor
which has been lobbing to open a store on North Lovers Lane Rd is
set to open on Dec 15th (right in the middle of the Christmas gift giving season)

Dollar Liquor, which sells reasonably price alcoholic beverages, hopes to
provide Wauwatosa with a low cost alternative to high price (foo foo) liquor
stores.

Alderman Vandulay, who's district would include Dollar Liquor, say that
Dollar Liquor would add to the mix of smaller upstart business running along
the Hwy 100 corridor.

Dollar Liquor provides customers with the option of buying single cans/bottles
of beer, out of stock domestic wines, airplane bottles (1-2 oz) liquor bottles as
well as cigarettes (individual), lighters and lottery tickets.

Dollar Liquor has also asked the City for a smoking exemption to create a smokers
Lounge for a more relaxed buying experience.

This colorful chutney is a super side dish or condiment served with pork, ham or poultry. It also makes a nice holiday gift.

Strain, reserving liquid. Return liquid to pan. Discard gingerroot; set pears aside. Stir cranberries into pan. Cook over medium heat until berries pop, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Strain berries, reserving liquid. Return liquid to pan; set berries aside. Bring liquid to a boil; cook, uncovered, until liquid is reduced to 1/2 cup. Stir in pears, cranberries and cinnamon. Serve warm or cold. Store in the refrigerator

My Original chutney recipe that I was going to post would have cost me my life, so I am posting this
one taken from the internet (not my wife's private recipe collection)

Hint to packrats-- Recipe is on the front of the Sunday Nov 17th, 1993 Milw Journal Food Section

VISA #2 Camping

By Peter Hart
Thursday, Nov 16 2006, 08:03 AM
Parka (insulated w/hood) $120
Boots (double lined) $90
Tent $85
Sleeping bag (subzero) $55
Thermos (with coffee) $15
Depends (extra absorbent) $18
Total $383

Having nothing better to do with your time than to spend
three days camping out in front of Best Buy (Mayfair) to
buy a kid's toy.
Priceless.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I have a idea. How about an employee of Best Buy asks those
camping out for their name, address & phone # and reserve the
PS3 for them-great customer service.

I have a better idea-have the City of Wauwatosa call Best Buy and
require them to do it, so this publicity stunt can end and no one ends
up in the hospital with frostbite.

PS. Anyone in for camping in front of Cranky Al's for it's opening?

Random act of kindness

By Peter Hart
Tuesday, Nov 14 2006, 09:39 PM
Last Friday, I was taking my son to Wittman for a WAC night (fun night)
The night was one of those dreary nights where the you didn't know if it
was raining or snowing. It was also very slick driving. I dropped my son off among
the mass of kids waiting to get in the doors. Wittman's parking lot has a kind
of circular drive that is marked by a short steep hill down and a windy steep hill up.

On my way out, I noticed a small black car (like mine) trying to make it up the hill.
The person driving was having some difficultly getting traction and began to slowly
slide back down the hill. I stopped my car, put it in reverse, and sat and watched the
car slowly move backwards and go over the curb with the two passenger wheels.

I backed up and parked my car. Several cars moved passed me and slid through
the small space on the road between the car and the other curb. I walked over to
find a lady in her 40-50's looking distressed. Her car was now half on the road
and half on the wet grass. Every time she tried to accelerate she would dig her
tire further in the mud. I tried pushing her car but the right back tire was wedged
against the curb. It was hopeless.

Cars kept slowly moving past us, looking at the sight, and continuing up the hill.

After about five minutes (seemed more like 15) a big truck passed, stopped and
reversed. The window rolled down and a guy asked if we needed help. I recognized
the guy as Don. I will only use Don's first name because I think he is the type of person that does deeds without wanting/needing acknowledgement.

Don, had a towing rope, hooked it to a place underneath her car (which I couldn't find).
Remember, it was still raining a little and there was mud and grass (it was recently sodded)
everywhere. Don got back in his truck and pulled the car off the curb. The lady was
very thankful and drove off. Don just waved and drove off too. I put the grass back as
best as I could.

Each time when I go past the tore-up grass, I will think of it, not as place not where someone decided to tear-up some grass, but instead where I witnessed a random act of kindness.

Green wins!

By Peter Hart
Tuesday, Nov 7 2006, 03:51 PM
In a landside, Congressman Mark Green has ousted Governor Jim Doyle!

Green who ran a straight-up, fair and determined race for Governor proved the
polls and pundits wrong and unseated the corrupt politician that called himself
Governor Doyle.

I always knew Mark Green would win because he was the right guy at the right time!

It's time to bring respect & integrity back to Madison!!!

The king is dead, long live the king!!!

PS. Jessica, this is a joke. Doyle won 49% to 47%

My predictions for Election Day

By Peter Hart
Monday, Nov 6 2006, 07:50 PM

1. The sun will come up
2. You will have at least five pre-recorded voice mail messages from candidates
3. They will have really good homemade cookies at the polling places
4. It won't rain or snow and will be really nice (for a change)
5. People who have signs for winning candidates will leave their signs out
longer than those who's candidate lost.
6. There will be people holding up candidate signs on overpasses (why I don't have a clue).
7. There will be a news station that wrongly predicts a candidate won when he/she lost.
8. Many people will be late for work and blame it on voting (some of whom did vote)
9. People who vote will feel good about voting
10. People who didn't vote will feel that it didn't matter (will be the first to sign the recall petition)
11. There will be a TV station that will mistakenly air a candidate's ad on Wednesday

Voting, it does a mind good :)

Salmon at work

By Peter Hart
Sunday, Nov 5 2006, 10:56 AM
Salmon are running at Miller park. Get down to the Hank Aaron Trail this week to
see hundreds of salmon trying to swim up the Menomonee River. Was down there
this morning and saw at least 40 big salmon. Take 94 east to Miller park. Go around Miller Park and park next to the brat house nd cross the bridge. Great day to get outside and see the magnificent sight!
My dog unfortunately likes chasing these fine creatures so I am too horse to scream at the TV for the Packer Game (this will please my wife).

Again great day to be outside and see the wildlife that still exist.

City & Public need's to come down hard on Mayfair Mall

By Peter Hart
Thursday, Nov 2 2006, 09:06 PM
I don't mean to step on Karen Waldkirch's toes on this blog but I really
think it's time for the City of Wauwatosa and it's people to send a
clear message to the Mayfair Mall's management-enough is enough!

Mayfair Mall's Management cannot continue to let Mayfair become the most
dangerous place in Tosa, where shoppers don't feel safe and criminals
feel they have the upper hand.

Wauwatosa can do two things which will hopefully get through to Mayfair
Mall's Management.

First, the city can begin by filing nuisance lawsuits against Mayfair Mall.
The lawsuits can reference the growing number of violent incidences and the
increasing cost of police resources being used by the mall.
The city needs to quantify the costs of the increased police calls.
How safe is the city when the majority of the police resources are being
spent on one area of the city-Mayfair Mall. Any look at the weekly crime
report will tell you that Mayfair Mall is a crime magnet.

The lawsuit should focus on the fact that the City is becoming less safe
with Mayfair here, and that cost of services (mostly police) in connection with
the Mall is increasing each year.

If Mayfair Mall was a hip-hop club it would have been closed years ago.

Second, People should make an effort not to shop at Mayfair. Nothing gets
a corporation's attention more than reduced profits. The only way Mayfair
Management will make significant security changes is when it's in their financial
interest. Lawsuits & lost profits speak their language.

If you have to shop, go to Brookfield Square or Bayshore-there are safer anyway.

We as citizens & shoppers shouldn't have to figure out how to make Mayfair safer,
that's Mayfair Mall Mangement's job. The City & it's people only need to show Mall
Management that it's in their financial interest to make it safer. The City, Mall & shoppers
will all benefit when the mall provides a safe & relaxing shopping experience.
