Crime Stoppers "Pancakes with Mom" Update

By Officer D.M. Semega
Monday, Apr 30 2007, 07:14 PM
The Wauwatosa Crime Stoppers are still seeking door prize donations, advertisers for our placemat and volunteers to assist in making the 5th Annual “Pancakes with Mom” a success.

Last year 1235 people attended this event, that means that 1235 placemats were used. The placemat is a great way to advertise your business or service for a small fee. All that is needed is your business card or other artwork that can be reduced to the size of a business card.

Regarding needing volunteers, anyone 13 or older is welcome. This is a great way to give to the community by assisting in raising funds for the Crime Stoppers. For just your 5 hour investment you will receive a great all you can eat breakfast and get the opportunity to meet new people. This is a great opportunity to earn service hours and build that personal resume.

If you can help with door prizes, want to volunteer or advertise on our placemat please contact Officer Don Semega at 414-471-8430 Ext. 5114 or dsemega@wauwatosa.net

The Wauwatosa Crime Stoppers, in conjunction with the Wauwatosa Savings Bank, Reinhart Foods, Starbucks Coffee and Metcalfe’s Sentry are sponsoring the fifth annual "Pancakes with Mom" breakfast. 1235 people attended last year's event which raised much needed funds for The Wauwatosa Crime Stoppers. This year's event will be held on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13, 2007 from 8:00am to 12:00pm at The Muellner Building at Hart Park, located at 7300 W. Chestnut St. in the city of Wauwatosa.

The event will offer all you can eat pancakes with syrup and fruit toppings, Klement’s sausage, Starbucks coffee, juice, milk, fresh fruit, and applesauce. There will also be flowers for Mom, live music, balloons, an art area, games and prizes for the kids Advance tickets will be sold for $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children age 3-12, and children under age 3 are free. Tickets may be purchased at The Little Read Book Store, located at 7603 W. State St. in Wauwatosa. People who purchase their tickets in advance will have their own entrance for speedy seating. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event. In addition to breakfast everyone who purchases a ticket will be eligible to enter any of the several door prize drawings. Last year’s door prizes totaled over $3,000 in value. All proceeds from this event will benefit The Wauwatosa Crime Stoppers, a citizen advisory board that operates on donations to reward callers. Individuals who call with information are assigned a code number, and instructed to call back at a later date. If the information leads to an arrest, the Crime Stoppers board will determine the amount of the reward, which may be as much as $1,000.00 cash.

In 2006 The Wauwatosa Crime Stoppers received 17 separate tips, which resulted in 7 arrests, solved 5 separate crimes. The Crime Stoppers board disbursed $2,000 in rewards.

Besides being able to purchase your tickets at the Little Read Book, you may also call the Wauwatosa Police Department’s Community Support Division at 414-471-8430 Ext. 111 to make arrangements to purchase your tickets at the Police Department.

If you wish to make a monetary donation to, become a corporate sponsor or member of the Wauwatosa Crime Stoppers please contact Officer Don Semega at 414-471-8430 Ext. 114. Or, better yet, attend the breakfast and seek out a member of the Crime Stoppers for more information!

We are also seeking volunteers above the age of 12 to help with serving, clean up and restocking. This is a great way to earn service hours and boost a personal portfolio. To volunteer call 414-471-8430 Ext. 114; you can leave a voice mail but please include your name and call back number. You may also email me at dsemega@wauwatosa.net

In Home Service Calls

By Officer D.M. Semega

When inviting installers, repair technicians, or any other services(s) into your home or apartment there are several things to consider. Although the majority of companies are honest and law abiding, an “In Home” visit can expose you to theft, burglary, or worse. Taking simple precautions and preparing for an in home visit is simple.

Whether your furnace or hot water heater needs service, you are having cable, satellite, or telephone service installed, or you are considering a home repair or improvement, there will occasions when you invite a stranger into your home or apartment.

Before considering a company, get to know your contractor:

• Use reputable companies that are established in your community.
• Use references from family, friends, and neighbors
• Research companies through the Better Business Bureau
• Use insured companies who conduct background checks on their workers
• Compile a list of companies before the need arises so you make sound decisions

Calling For Service

• When making the appointment ask the name or names of the employee(s) coming to your home
• Ask the exact time you can expect the employee(s) and if they can call just before arrival
• Get a description of the service vehicle(s)

Prepare Yourself and Your Home

• Hide easy to carry away valuables
• Do not “brag” about or “Show off” valuables or collectables
• Have a family member or friend with you during the visit if you are uneasy being alone

Upon Arrival

• Look for marked company vehicle
• Look for employee uniforms and photo identification
• Keep employee(s) under observation and limit access to unnecessary areas
• Be suspicious of employees who appear more concerned about your belongings than their job

If at anytime during a service visit you become uncomfortable, ask the worker(s) to leave.

If you feel you have been the victim of a crime, call local law enforcement immediately.
