Though I share your enthusiasm for the election result, Suzanne, I see little peril in our voting machines. I have confidence both in the scanners and the ability of even a first-time voter to connect the arrows. Leave allegations of "chicanery and glitches" to the sore losers.

Leave them, too, your assertion that Obama's victory came "despite corporate media." Virtually all the media are corporate, and they thrive by keeping you informed. Listen to and watch the news you find reliable, the opinions you believe to be reasoned and fair, and patronize their advertisers. Then, as a majority of voters seem to have done, make up your own mind.

in My new "hood" Astor/Ogden there are SO MANY Pesticide flags up....draining into the Lake water and everything in their wake...

I want to order some MORE of their door hangers (which, I believe list the Hazards of Lawn Chemicals) - as if they did not KNOW by Now....:((

What's wrong with the 'old' street lighting is that the poles had rusted (in just around 10 years time) to the point of having to be replaced anyway as possible hazards!

The group responsible for that project never checked to see what effect road salt and our weather would have on the fixtures! This is one of the reasons we're shaking our heads when things like parking & planters, etc turn up during THIS project!

History is NOT doomed to repeat itself, but people who don't bother to follow history ARE!

It has been an obstacle course! In mid-May, I frequnetly walked my daughter in a jogging stroller down Oakland. There were no ramps at the ends of the blocks or at the make shift cross walk near Oakland and Lake Bluff. Using a jogging stroller, we were ok going up & over the bumps and into the unfilled squares waiting for cement, but how would someone in a wheel chair or using a walker get across the street? (ps--I would love to know what was wrong with the old street lights that we needed $1 million new lights!)

I just checked my car alongside the tree-framing outside Walgreen's....passenger door opens less than 12 inches! That's no where NEARLY enough for a person to get out...

Shorewood has a combined storm water and sanitary sewer system, which means that when it rains, all the water that goes to a storm drain enters the sanitary sewer system. Only parts of Milwaukee have this system. Much of Milwaukee and all the other suburbs have separate systems. When MMSD has to dump untreated sewage into the lake, we in Shorewood heavily contribute to this environmental atrocity, more than any other suburb. We as Shorewood residents need to live up to our environmental beliefs and pay the price (which will be high) to separate our sewer systems so that we do not contribute dumping sewage into Lake Michigan.

Lots of options here: if you can't do it yourself you could always hire someone to clear your sidewalk (wouldn't cost much); in emergencies, we use simple old Morton's table salt on the sidewalk (again doesn't cost or require much to use on the sidewalk in front of a Shorewood house lot and you can buy it and easily carry it from Pick&Save); confidence (doesn't cost anything), some table salt and modest effort with a garden shovel would do wonders even if you are 70-years-old (and after you tackle your sidewalk you can skip the gym - win, win).

How terrible. I have been disappointed lately that drivers in our walking community can be so careless. Even drivers with kids in the backseat often do not slow down for pedestrians even when they are in the crosswalk. Last summer, I saw drivers nearly plow down children and families as they crossed next to the Yield for Pedestrian signs on Oakland. The Shorewood Police speed trap on both Capitol and Lake Drive, but it would do the community a greater service if they watched on side streets and near Oakland for drivers that show no regard for pedestrians.

Why Blog?

Blogging is enabling the citizens of the society to actually take part in their own governance and in their society in ways never thought of before. They can report as journalers, criticize, comment, complain, argue and give advice.

If Shorewood politicians are as astute as Dawn (Trustee Anderson) is, they would take notice as she does to the bloggers. I'm certainly voting for her. She's my type of politico and I'm sure a good blogger.
